Creating Mobile Broadband Availability Maps

This Reference Guide is intended to be a supplement to Formatting Mobile Broadband Availability Coverage Maps and will provide a walkthrough of some common steps required to convert raw data into data that can successfully be uploaded to the BDC.

Some common tasks that may be required to successfully create mobile broadband availability maps include: (i) having a spatial dataset with multiple technology-speed combinations, (ii) creating signal strength bins, (iii) having a dataset with a spectrum attribute (where polygons for different spectrums may overlap), and (iv) safely removing overlapping polygons for the same technology-speed combination.

In the documents linked to below, you will find a section devoted to each of these tasks.  Should you have a dataset with various technologies and/or speeds, Section I. will guide you through how to use GIS selection tools to create datasets consisting of only one technology-speed combination.  If your data has irregular signal strength values, Section II. describes how to use field calculation tools to create uniform signal strength bins (heat maps).  You may track frequency spectrum or some other attribute in your data.  This could lead to overlapping polygons for the same technology-speed combination.  Section III. provides the steps to take to properly format such data.  Section IV. outlines a process to remove overlaps within one file or between two or more files for the same technology-speed combination.  You are free to only reference those sections that are applicable to your data and needs.
